Duniyo Mohamed Ali
Chairperson
Duniyo Mohamed Ali, Chairperson of Independence House Board of Directors, she is a gender and human rights expert with more than 35 years of experience in education, advocacy, and leadership. She studied biochemistry at Lafoole University and also holds qualifications in political science and teacher training. Over the years, Duniyo has led major initiatives in Somalia and across the Horn of Africa, working on women’s rights, child protection, governance, and peacebuilding. She has served in senior roles with IIDA Women’s Development Organization and currently leads the Somali Women Education Centre as Executive Director, where she oversees strategy, partnerships, and program implementation.
As Chairperson of Independence House, Duniyo brings a wealth of experience in advocacy, institution building, and community engagement. She has been part of landmark efforts such as pushing for women’s inclusion in Somali politics, supporting human rights legislation, and mediating in peace and reconciliation processes. Her long career in advancing gender equality and democratic values aligns with the mission of Independence House to promote human and political rights, press freedom, and democracy in Somalia and the wider region.
